Sometimes the only way to determine if aggressive therapy has worked is to explore the patient surgically some time after initial therapy. Second-look surgery can discover if there is any residual or recurrent cancer, which may help decide whether treatment is complete or if more radiotherapy or chemotherapy is needed. Residual tumor may also be removed during the operation.
